It’s been five years since Nas first graced our shores in 2009, and after a false start last year with the Movement Festival we see him this time returning to Melbourne only event Sugar Mountain, on January 24th. We can reveal the set list for Nas’s headlining set, right here, right now.
1. The Genesis
2. N.Y. State of Mind
3. Life’s a Bitch
4. The World Is Yours
5. Halftime
6. Memory Lane (Sittin’ in da Park)
7. One Love
8. One Time 4 Your Mind
9. Represent
10. It Ain’t Hard to Tell
Yes! It’s Illmatic in its entirety! Full disclosure, this may or may not be Nas’s final set list. However, Sugar Mountain have announced, in a very Coachella inspired move, that for the headlining set Nas will be performing the 1994 classic in full!
At 39 minutes and 51 seconds I hope festival goers know they are in for a short set, unless Nas plays a few other tracks alongside this promised Illmatic. The general way things tend to work is that tracks are actually shortened when performed live, intros and outros are cut down, some chorus and hooks can be cut. But who knows. Maybe he’ll just press play on a CD and rap along like we have done, oh so many many times before.
In 2009 Nas toured with live band Mullato and african drummer Leon Mobley, which added an intense, theatric vibe, that worked incredibly will such iconic tracks. Will this Illmatic set be one mic and one DJ? Who knows. Five years ago we witnessed 6 out of 10 of these tracks plus other crowd favourites like Hip Hop is Dead, Hero, I Can, Can’t Forget About You, The Message, Street Dreams and of course, One Mic
So although we are disappointed in some ways, as many great Nas tracks will most likely not getting a look in, any live Nas is incredibly dope and much appreciated. We are just a bit bitter that to witness the show we will have to fly to Melbourne, fight with hordes of hipsters, not get to see all our favourite tracks, and admit the fact we are going to a festival called Sugar Mountain. However, we will point out, that at $130.00 for early bird tickets, it’s nearly feasible to check it out for Nas alone, and of course being the open-minded multi genre music lovers we are (NOT) there might be a few other acts that are worth catching.

Fingers are well and truly crossed for side shows. Don’t let us down promoters!
To keep you going through to Jan, here’s a list of great Nas tracks that you probably WON’T hear at sugar mountain.
