[dropcap size=big]D[/dropcap]esert Pea Media is excited to announce that the time to release the first ‘Song Nation’ compilation has finally arrived.
A full-length album of original Hip Hop music and online videos celebrating the much alive, vibrant and colourful Indigenous contemporary culture and the new talent found in young people across regional and remote areas of Australia and Torres Straits Islands.
‘We’re hoping to demonstrate to young people that their voices are relevant and their stories important; that they have the capacity to shape their own future and that people are listening.
We want to show communities that their young people are proud of their cultural heritage and in their stories and voices is held the hope for the future of Indigenous Australia.’ – Toby Finlayson, Desert Pea Founder
“Today is the official release of ‘Song Nation Volume 1’ – the much anticipated debut album from Desert Pea Media, a non-profit organisation working in remote Indigenous communities around Australia for over a decade. Featuring 11 songs & 11 music videos from 10 communities all over the country, ‘Song Nation Volume 1’ is a long way from your average community media project.
“It’s a really exciting time for us here at Desert Pea Media – this album has been a long time in development! The communities and young people are so excited to see and hear their stories told to audiences around the nation, and the support from the media and wider community has been overwhelming.
It’s also a real honour to be able to contribute to the celebrations around National NAIDOC Week, and be able to showcase the talents
and important stories of our Indigenous young people Australia wide.
We as a nation still have a long way to go in recognising and respecting the strong and unique Indigenous cultural identities that exists all over this country, and the irrepressible spirituality that flows in the stories and songs of country here in Australia.
NAIDOC Week is one of the rare moments in the calendar that makes us at Desert Pea Media feel very very proud to be Australian. We hope you enjoy ‘Song Nation Volume 1’ as much as we enjoyed working on it”. – DESERT PEA MEDIA TEAM – ”
