[OZ CD] Lazy Grey - The Soundtrack (review by gerling)
Brisbane's favourite son has brought forth a new offering, and it's impressive. When I first put this album on, I didn't get into it immediately.
It isn't something that can grow on you unless you sit down and dedicate time to examining it. But it's worth those first few concentrated back to
back listens: there is a lot going on, you'd be crazy to miss it.
Lazy Grey has lost none of his frustrated verbal elegance, and with 'The Soundtrack' he proves that he is one of Oz hip hop's
pre-eminent MCs. His diction is crisp, his flow is effortless and he can still write intricate, clever rhymes.
Dave V's production is immaculate and it's complex without getting tangled up in its own feet. It can feel a little clinical at
times, but the sheer intelligence of it tends to make up for that coolness of sound. The difference in tone between 'The Soundtrack' and 'Banned in
Queensland' reminds me of the difference between Jehst's 'Falling Down' and 'Nuke Proof Suit': the first had those muddy, honey thick beats that
sounded like a third hand brown couch. In contrast, the albums that follow sounded harder and more angular – less brown couch, more futuristic bar
stool.
I get the feeling that this is a producer's album: it took me a lot of listens to get an idea of what V is doing here. Show N Prove, for
example, is divided into two distinct parts, but it was only after repeated listens that I realised what was going on: V uses the same set of samples
on both halves, but in two very different ways. It's almost as if you have a sonic version of two different people's internal monologues about the
same thing.
The transition from Show N Prove to Smoke Steady made my hair stand on end. That Big L sample twisted with the brightly chiming
tinkerbells is so outrageously good that it should be a crime. As it lazily winds down with cheesy 80s muzak, you're suddenly given a slap in the
face by Can't Stop Won't Stop. I can't say I'm the biggest fan of Bigfoot, but this trio of tracks is so good that not even the ockerest
of ocker MCs can detract from it.
This is an album I would love to see performed live. I get the feeling that those moments where V gets a little clinical would be utter bloodbaths on
stage. Lazy's words are sometimes shaded out a little by the beats, so it would be good to see the translation from studio to stage.
'The Soundtrack' is a crisp winter apple for your palate: you might find it a little tart at first, but the sweetness shines through as you digest
it. A handsome effort from two polished talents.

Lazy + V + DCE = Australia's super supreme team.
Doesn't get any better.
And this news just at hand / Sorry for not trying to change the world through raw urban expressionism and thoughtful upliftment, but sometimes you
just have to write a track about throwing shit at cunts / P.S. RIP Alan. Your casual gait, and sensible yet stylish taste in shorts and long socks
will be missed by all / In my youth, I wouldn't have predicted that the high point of my adult life would be exposure to a t-shirt depicting
Putin as a unicorn. But here we are./ Got half you blokes laughing at me, other half starting on me, julie wanting me money, i mean jesus whats the
point of even being straight i mays well just choof drink snort what ev
